Vascular surgery is an independent and separate specialty in medicine, which deals with conditions of the vessels, that is arteries, veins and lymphatics, except for heart and brain vessels that concern cardiology – cardiac surgery and neurosurgery, respectively.
The Department of vascular surgery – angiology is in full development and operation, providing sound approach, diagnosis and therapy for the patient suffering from vascular conditions. There is also an outpatients department and handling of emergencies around the clock, by experienced vascular surgeons supported by fully equipped departments of vascular ultrasounds (triplex), classical digital angiography, CT and MRI angiography.
In cooperation with the Clinical Pathology – Haematology laboratory, cases of venous thromboses and venous ulcers of lower limbs are admitted and investigated. Patients with diabetes mellitus and peripheral angiopathy (diabetic foot) are managed and monitored.
In the inpatient wards, experienced and specialised nursing staff is by the side of the patient. There is also cooperation with doctors of all specialties as well as the possibility of support with an Intensive Care Unit and a Haemodialysis Unit, provided in the soundest manner medical care and safety.
In the specially-designed operating room classical heart and vessel surgeries are performed for any vascular disease. By way of indication, the most common are mentioned:
- Treatment of varicose veins in the lower limbs with classical excision or by endovascular application of laser.
- Repair of ventricular and thoracic aorta, either by classical or endovascular placement of stents and grafts.
- Surgical repair of carotid stenosis and, in selected cases, percutaneous angioplasty and stenting.
- Surgical operation for the reperfusion of lower limbs (by-pass).
- Percutaneous angioplasty of peripheral and visceral arteries by stenting.
- Formation of fistula and placement of permanent venous catheters in patients undergoing dialysis.
The Department of vascular surgery, following modern medical technology that is progressing rapidly, applying with a high success rate its advances and respecting the principles of vascular surgery, provides top-level medical care recognising the peculiarities of modern life.
