INTENSIVE CARE UNIT
The Intensive Care Unit of the Athens Bioclinic is staffed around the clock by: a) intensive care specialists (anaesthesiologists, internal medicine specialists, pulmonologists); b) trained and experienced nursing staff in the ideal proportion to patient of 1: 1.5; c) team of physiotherapists – speech therapists; and d) extensive laboratory equipment to carry out all investigations. The above are provided together with the existing programme for the continuous and consistent upgrading of infrastructure to support and monitor the vital signs of critically ill patients thereby ensuring full trust by the medical community and relatives regarding the stay of family who are critically ill.
The Athens Bioclinic ICU supports the vital functions of critically ill adult patients regardless of cause or severity, implementing international protocols and guidelines on management and therapy. More specifically, the ICU provides:
- Mechanical support for acute and chronic respiratory failure using interventional or not ventilation.
- Haemodynamic support and monitoring, titrated per patient if needed.
- Full monitoring of brain injury using intraparenchymal catheters for tissue pressure and oxygenation, concurrently with treatment protocols of mild hypothermia
- Support of chronic or acute renal failure using a dialysis machine (in chronic patients) or the latest method of continuous Venovenous haemodiafiltration (CVVHF)
- Every interventional bedside procedure, without further internal hospital movements, such as: a) percutaneous tracheostomy; b) percutaneous gastrostomy; c) peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC); d) effusion paracentesis and drainage under US guidance; e) fibreoptic evaluation of swallowing; f) endoscopic examinations (bronchoscopy, GI endoscopy)
- All imaging examinations at the Imaging department of the Athens Bioclinic, with safety and under continuous monitoring, IV sedation and conventional mobile respirator ambient MRI)
The Athens Bioclinic ICU also accommodates and supports patients:
- In the post-operative phase, until the time needed for extubation and transfer to the surgical wards.
- Needing increased care that lacks in other hospitals, in a specially-designed area
- After extended hospital stay until improving enough to be transferred to rehabilitation centres or in case of worsening of their health status when in such centres
In the Athens Bioclinic ICU all staff aided by equipment of the latest technology are in the service of the patient, in order to stabilise the patient’s clinical picture, see to their gradual improvement and speedy discharge from the ICU setting. Likewise in cases lacking a happy ending, relatives have the full support of all the ICU staff by a humane and familiar care of their loved one as well as support characterised by decency.
In the Athens Bioclinic ICU our patients’ relatives enjoy the same attention and support as our patients by offering two visiting times (midday – afternoon) when they can be also informed from the attending doctors who are always by their side.
