The ophthalmology department of the Athens Bioclinic is a fully equipped and staffed department in our hospital, which provides high-quality care to patients. It covers every aspect of modern ophthalmology, including an outpatients department for the primary care of patients, a lab for any additional diagnostic test required, and an operating room for any eye surgery.
Outpatients department
Its working hours span mornings and afternoons on weekdays and morning on Saturdays, covering scheduled and emergency cases of both outpatients and inpatients.
Its equipment is adequate, comprising infrastructure such as: examination unit equipped with a modern refractometer/keratometer, slit lamp and portable devices for every eye testing need (corrective lenses for refraction problems, direct/indirect ophthalmoscope, tonometer, examination lenses, etc).
Also within the outpatients department there is equipment for the pre-operative assessment of patients with cataracts (biometry).
The department is staffed with eye doctors experienced in general ophthalmology and further trained in modern specialties (e.g. glaucoma, cataract, refractive conditions, eyebrow conditions, fundus conditions, etc), so as to cover even the most specialised eye problems.
Ophthalmology laboratory
It operates side by side to the outpatients department, in a separate area, playing an integral role to cover all modern eye tests and procedures that do not require admission.
It is divided into 2 sectors: Diagnostic and therapeutic.
The diagnostic sector is also split into two sub-sectors depending on the subject:
- Electrophysiology department, which provides:
- Electroretinography (ERG)
- Multifocal electroretinography
- Visual evoked potentials
- Department of ophthalmological imaging, which provides:
- High-resolution optical coherence tomography (OCT-SLO)
- Department of visual fields, which provides:
- Automated static perimetry (standard & blue on yellow perimetry)
- Automated kinetic perimetry (especially for neurological cases)
- Microperimetry (especially for macular conditions)
The interventional sector provides services using modern equipment to treat conditions such as glaucoma, secondary cataract and fundus conditions:
- Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT)
- to manage glaucoma and eye hypertony
- YAG Laser
- to manage secondary cataracts and some types of glaucoma
- Argon Laser
- to treat fundus conditions
The purpose of establishing this lab, other than providing equipment to the eye department, is to offer eye diagnostic and therapeutic care of the highest quality by specialist eye doctors.
We also aspire to form personal relationships between our doctors and collaborating doctors, by building mutual trust and understanding, which finally will be enjoyed by the patient.
The lab’s operation thus aims at directly working together with collaborating doctors and having their full involvement, either by referring patients or with their natural presence when their patients are cared after.
To this end, use of lasers is for either the Clinic’s doctors or collaborating eye doctors that wish to do so, after agreeing with the department’s supervisor.
Ophthalmological surgery
This is performed in a separate room of the Athens Bioclinic surgical suite, with full equipment (Zeiss surgical microscope, Infinity by Alcon lens-splitting system, set of surgical tools) to perform all procedures in the frontal part of the eye.
Strict observance of the operating rules of the Clinic’s operating rooms, as well as the experienced nursing staff, guarantee optimal and safe management of our patients.
Also, the supervisor of the eye department is at the disposal of every colleague when needed for procedural or medical issues, by providing ease and support that allow dedication to the medical tasks at hand.
Patient hospitalisation
Despite the fact that most modern eye procedures do not require hospitalisation (one day clinic), our hospital provides our patients with the best environment for a short or longer stay. The premises and the staff of the patients wards ensure for the best recuperation of patients, while in the one day clinic, the cost of stay is integrated in the highly competitive plans offered by the Bioclinic’s management to our department’s patients.
