DEPARTMENT OF INTERNAL MEDICINE
Scientific Manager: Epameinondas Kotronis
In the Athens Bioclinic, as in all hospitals worldwide, the internal medicine department plays the most important and necessary role for the their organisation, structure and operation.
It is staffed by experienced, specialised medical and nursing personnel, who, aided by the Accident & Emergency Department, the ICU and the labs (haematology, imaging), which operate around the clock, can admit successfully and sufficiently patients suffering from conditions of any severity and complexity.
The work of the internal medicine department is summarised below:
- As directed by the hospital, there are morning and afternoon internal medicine outpatients departments.
- The A&E department deals with emergency internal medicine cases throughout the day and night
- Always available, staffed with internal medicine specialists, who have been selected for their hard-working ethos and their sound scientific training.
- It provides scientific aid (consultation) to patients that fall under other specialties, immediately on request.
- With its tasks clearly specified, this department has taken on prevention, supervision and recording of infectious diseases as well as the drafting of regular reports to the Greek centre for disease control & prevention.
- It takes part in hospital meetings to solve any problems that fall in its discipline.
- The department’s main concern, however, is the fast diagnostic approach to patients, the administration of treatment, and the referral to other medical specialties if needed, for further evaluation or management, as well as patient hospitalisation if necessary.
Medical responsibility covers the entire spectrum of internal medicine, such as infectious diseases, metabolic disorders, malignancies (neoplasms), acid-base homeostasis, electrolyte imbalances, autoimmune diseases as well as any concurrent disease or condition arising in any organ system.
The presence of the internal medicine department within the Athens Bioclinic, in addition to the above, through its fast action provides every inpatient and doctor with the confidence and trust that are needed for the successful resolution of any health issue.
To achieve this, the internal medicine department is aided by the solid organisation of the hospital, the well-defined duties of all staff concerned, the modern equipment of clinical units and labs, as well as politeness and knowledge to and from staff, with the ultimate goal being the patient’s benefit, a successful outcome to health issues, feeling safe before and after staying at the hospital.
